The Three Frame Styles
Frameless
No metal frame around the glass. Clean, modern look. Uses thicker glass (3/8" or 1/2") to stand on its own. Most popular for remodels in Portland. Highest cost, lowest maintenance.
Semi-Frameless
Frame on the fixed panels, frameless door. Good middle ground — cleaner than fully framed but more affordable than fully frameless. Works well in most Portland bathrooms.
Framed
Full aluminum frame around all panels. Most affordable option. Requires more cleaning around the frame tracks. Good for rental properties or budget remodels.
Glass Thickness: Does It Matter?
Yes — especially for frameless enclosures. Here's what the numbers mean:
- 1/4" (6mm) — Minimum for framed enclosures. Not suitable for frameless.
- 3/8" (10mm) — Standard for frameless doors and panels. Solid feel, good durability.
- 1/2" (12mm) — Premium frameless option. Heavier, more substantial feel. Best for large openings.
Glass Coatings Worth Paying For
Portland's hard water leaves mineral deposits on glass fast. A good coating makes a real difference in how often you're cleaning.
Easy-Clean / Hydrophobic Coating
A factory-applied coating that causes water to bead and roll off the glass. Dramatically reduces soap scum and mineral buildup. Worth the upcharge on any frameless installation — typically adds $150–$300 to the job.
Brands include ClearShield, Diamon-Fusion, and Rain-X (applied in the field). We recommend ClearShield on all our frameless installs.
Privacy Glass Options
- Frosted / acid-etched glass — permanent, even privacy. Classic look.
- Patterned glass (rain, reeded, fluted) — trending in 2026. Partial privacy with visual interest.
- Low-iron glass — not a privacy option, but worth knowing: it's clearer and less green-tinted than standard glass. Better for showing off tile work.
- Tinted glass — bronze or gray tint. Adds privacy and a spa-like feel.
